The examples of columns you see here, are of correct design and specifications. They are not like the ones you can buy in a lumber store - cylindrical shapes from which grooves are cut out.

The correct shape is fluted so that the flute travels from point to point or fillet. Of course there is far more to it than that. The dimensions are all interdependent. The overall length of the column will determine the thickness or diameter of the column and in turn it prescribes the length and pitch of the flutes.

Surround yourself with some of these and you will be capable of greater things - inspiration is a great motivator.
